Man of Iron, winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Marathon and a champion in Ireland, is scheduled to be sold during the Tattersalls July auction in England as a horse in training. The 5-year-old son of Giant's Causeway raced most recently in January and hasn’t won in eight outings since his Breeders’ Cup triumph at Santa Anita Park in Southern California.
Cataloged as Hip No. 670, Man of Iron is consigned to the auction by trainer Luca Cumani’s Bedford House Stables. The chestnut horse has won four of his 18 career races and finished third twice.
Out of 2007 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour (by Deputy Minister), Man of Iron is a half brother to champion and 2007 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Rags to Riches (by A.P. Indy), 2008 Belmont winner Jazil (by Seeking the Gold), and 2008 Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II) winner Casino Drive (by Mineshaft ).
Man of Iron won the Breeders’ Cup Marathon for Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith. Since then, he has carried the colors of Samanda Racing.
