Inglorious preparing for the Oaks at Woodbine.
Inglorious, undefeated in three starts over the local Polytrack, is the horse to beat in the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks, presented by Budweiser, for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies June 5.
A field of nine was drawn for the 1 1/8-mile Woodbine Oaks, the first leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara. TVG will have live coverage of the race, as well as the $150,000 Plate Trial Stakes for 3-year-olds, which is a major prep for the June 26 Queen’s Plate.
Post time for Woodbine’s 11-race card begins at 1 p.m. EDT with the Woodbine Oaks slated for a 5:16 start.
Donver Stable’s Inglorious was pegged as the 5-2 morning-line choice. She enters the race off of a 1 1/2-length victory in the May 15 La Lorgnette at Woodbine, as she rallied from off the pace and skillfully passed a wall of horses in the stretch to score as the 3-5 choice.
“That was a little nerve-wracking," said trainer Josie Carroll. “I know she's a very bold filly, so when the hole opened I knew she wouldn't hesitate. She appears to be on her game.”
Inglorious, by Hennessy, won both starts as a juvenile in stakes company at Woodbine. She finished runner-up in the Feb. 19 Rachel Alexandra (gr. III) and fourth in the March 26 Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II) to begin her sophomore season—both of them coming on natural dirt.
Carroll will give a leg up to Luis Contreras, Woodbine’s leading rider. They will break from post 3. Inglorious was bred by Arosa Farms and is out of the
Smart Strike mare Noble Strike.
Carroll’s other starter will be
Silver Ami (15-1), a winner of her last two starts including a May 8 local allowance race.
The 3-1 second choice is Melnyk Racing Stables’ homebred
Roxy Gap, also undefeated in three tries over the Woodbine main track. The daughter of
Indian Charlie was perfect in three starts as a juvenile, including a win on turf, then began her 3-year-old season with a third-place finish in the Old Hat (gr. III) on the Gulfstream dirt.
Roxy Gap, trained by two-time Oaks winner Mark Casse, rebounded in her most recent start to win the seven-furlong Fury Stakes by three parts of a length at Woodbine. This will be her first try at a route of ground. Patrick Husbands, also with two Oaks triumphs, will have the mount from post 7.
Casse will also saddle
Spooky Kitten (12-1), a former $20,000 claimer who was fifth in the La Lorgnette.
Also coming out of the Fury Stakes is the runner-up, Glen Hill Farm’s
Marketing Mix (6-1).
The third choice is Bear Stables’ lightly-raced
Bear It's Time, who will be making only her fourth start for trainer Reade Baker. The
Philanthropist filly has made all three starts on the Woodbine Polytrack, breaking her maiden at second asking in December and, after getting more than five months off, returned to win her season debut last month in the seven-furlong Lady Angela Stakes. This will be her first start around two turns.
Baker, who won the Oaks in 2005 with Gold Strike, has assigned Emma-Jayne Wilson to ride Bear It’s Time (5-1).
Roger Attfield, a three-time Oaks winner, will send out Stronach Stables’ homebred
Abrianna (8-1), a maiden winner last out in her fourth start; Princess Elizabeth winner
Grand Style (8-1) will start for Mike Doyle; and
Charismatically (20-1), claimed for $32,000 out of her last start and still looking for her first win, complete the field.
The
Plate Trial, set to go to post at 4:41 p.m., drew a field of nine sophomore Canadian-breds going nine furlongs. Bear Stables’
Bear's Chill and Charles Fipke’s homebred
Check Your Soul both enter off of local stakes wins.
Bear’s Chill took the May 7 Queenston Stakes on May 7 for his second straight win and Check Your Soul scored the May 1 Wando in his stakes debut. The only other starter coming off a win is
Hippolytus—one of two trained by Casse—who bagged a 1 1/16-mile allowance on May 8.
