Affirmed Success, likely for the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT), worked five furlongs in 1:00 Thursday on the "good" inner turf course at Belmont Park.

"He went his first quarter in :12 3/5 and galloped out just at a minute. He's handled every place we've run him, and he's only lost once on this course. And that was to Forbidden Apple in the Kelso last year when we were giving (four pounds) weight," said his trainer Richard Schosberg.

The conditioner said Affirmed Success would proably work next Wednesday and maybe the following Tuesday. "We'll play it by ear, though. It all depends on the weather, and if it comes to it, he can get by with one work before the Breeders' Cup."

Affirmed Success ran fourth to War Chant in the Mile last year at Churchill Downs, separated from the winner by a neck and two noses. In 1999, he was 12th of 14 in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Gulfstream Park and in 1998, he was sixth as the Sprint favorite at Churchill Downs.
