Shadwell Estate Company's Mutamam, impressive winner of the recent Canadian International, will get his second shot at the Breeders' Cup Turf, in which he finished fourth last year. The Turf will be the career finale for Mutamam, who will stand at England's National Stud in Newmarket.
Mutamam was sired by the now-deceased stallion Darshaan, the 1984 French champion and French Derby winner who won five of seven starts. A top sire in Europe, Darshaan was leading broodmare sire in England in 1999.
On the female side, Mutamam's second dam, Amazer, was the foundation mare for John Moore's Biddestone Stud in southwest England. A winning daughter of French-bred Mincio, Amazer was quite an amazing broodmare. All 17 of the foals she produced made it to the track, and she was represented by 15 winners. The best horse produced from the mare, bought by Moore at the conclusion of her racing career, was Mtoto (by Busted), the champion older horse in Britain in 1987 who is now a sire. Savoureuse Lady (by Caerleon), the other group winner for Amazer, was also a stakes producer. Amazer's stakes-placed foals included Petal Girl (by Caerleon), the dam of Mutamam; Astonished (by Connaught), the dam of stakes winner Sandbank; and Button Up, the dam of group III winner Ruffle and granddam of French steeplechase stakes winner Go Between.
