Bold Chieftain leads a field of eight in the Berkeley.

The $100,000 Berkeley Stakes (gr. III) drew a field of eight, including Bold Chieftain, who has been oh-so-close to winning the race the last two years.

The 1 1/16-mile event on Tapeta is the feature on Golden Gate Fields’ nine-race card and has a probable post of 4:15 p.m. PDT.
Bold Chieftain looks to finally conquer the Berkeley after finishing second in 2009 and 2010, losing by a head both times. Trained by William J. Morey, Jr., the 8-year-old son of Chief Seattle has won 13 stakes and earned $1,558,291 in 40 career starts. He is winless in two starts this season, including a fourth in the San Francisco Mile (gr. IIIT), a race he won in 2010. Russell Baze will have the mount and they will break from the rail.
Also in the field is Delightful Kiss, a 7-year-old gelding who has captured five stakes and banked $1,093,593 in 32 trips to the starting gate; Knockout Artist, a 7-year-old gelding who has been victorious in four of his last five races but hasn’t won a stakes since July 18, 2007, when he took a division of the Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar; Hudson Landing, who won the Alcatraz Stakes at Golden Gate Fields last year; and Mobilized, third in the Tiznow Stakes at Hollywood Park on April 23.
