Gregory D. Hawkins' Campanile registered his second consecutive victory in the A.P. Smithwick Memorial Steeplechase Thursday at Saratoga. Ridden by Blythe Miller, Campanile carried 158 pounds over 2 1/16 miles on the soft turf in 3:57 2/5 for a 2 3/4 -length win over Golden Rule. It was another five lengths to Aggro Crag.
Completing the order of finish were Ninepins, Commanders Palace, Romantic, and Greek Hero, who set the early pace until being overtaken by the winner after the field had gone around the grass course the first time.
The victory was Campanile's first in four starts this year and represented the 6-year-old Illinois-bred gelding's fifth victory in 17 lifetime tries over the fences. On the flat, Campanile had one victory in 16 starts. The son of Lear Fan is trained by Janet Elliot.
Campanile returned $6.50, $3 and $2.60. Golden Rule paid $4.10 and $3.30, and Aggro Crag was $4.
