Mare In Foal To Silver Charm Tops First Open Session Of OBS Sale

Herbs and Spices, a 19-year-old mare by Relaunch, brought a final bid of $39,000 on Wednesday to top the first of two open sessions during the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's fall mixed sale in Central Florida. Gregerson Enterprises bought the 19-year-old mare, who is in foal to champion and dual classic winner Silver Charm.

Herbs and Spices was produced from grade I winner Prize Spot (by Little Current) and is a half-sister to stakes winner Georgia River (by Irish River). Herbs and Spices also the dam of stakes winner Effectiveness (by Notebook). Glen Hill Farm, agent, consigned the session topper.

In all, 210 horses sold for a total of $942,800, compared with 212 horses bringing $1,167,100 at the corresponding session a year ago. The average price was $4,490, compared with $5,505 in 2000. The median price was $3,000, compared with $3,200 last year. The buy-back rate was 27.3%, compared with 25.9% last year. Haras La Pomme was the session's leading buyer, acquiring five horses for a total of $57,900.

The four-day auction concludes on Thursday with the second open session.
