German raider Estejo withstood the late challenge of Viola Ici to capture the €297,000 Premio Presidente della Repubblica GBI Racing (Ity-I) at Capannelle May 15.

Owned by Giovanne Martone and trained by Ralf Rohne, Estejo notched the second group I victory in his career. The 7-year-old son of Johan Cruyff also won the 2008 Premio Roma (Ity-I).

Jockey Umberto Rispoli settled Estejo into third after the start, as stablemate Russian King set a decent pace on the lead. Branderburgo raced in second, with Viola Ici and favored Zazou placed toward the rear of the pack.

The pace began to quicken with three furlongs left, as Viola Ici and Zazou started moving on the leaders. Branderburgo took the lead briefly as Russian King began to fade. Estejo, put under drive by Rispoli, rolled past Branderburgo to take command with just over a furlong left to run.

Under strong encouragement by his rider, Estejo held off the late challenge of Viola Ici to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Viola Ici held on to second by a neck over Quiza Quiza Quiza, with Zazou fading to finish seventh.

Final time for the 10 furlongs over the soft going was 2:00.60.

The victory improved Estejo’s record to nine wins from 28 starts. Bred in Germany by Gestut Schallern, Estejo is out of stakes-placed Este, by The Noble Player.
