Monarchos  , who won the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) 10 years ago, was returned to Nuckols Farm near Midway, Ky., following successful colic surgery April 19.

“His recovery from the surgery is right on course and barring any unforeseen problems, he should be back to his old self in the very near future,” said farm owner Charles Nuckols III. “The outpouring of support and inquiries from breeders and fans has been phenomenal.”

Thirteen-year-old Monarchos (Maria's Mon—Regal Band, by Dixieland Band) ran the second-fastest Kentucky Derby in history in 1:59.97, joining Secretariat as the only winners to cover the mile and a quarter distance in less than two minutes. Monarchos also won the Florida Derby (gr. I), finished second in the Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) and ran third in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) for owner John Oxley.

Monarchos has sired 13 stakes winners, including champion female sprinter Informed Decision and 2011 grade II winner Win Willy.
