The record-setting rains of April in the Cincinnati, Ohio area have forced officials at River Downs to push back their expected live racing opening of Friday, April 29, to a date yet to be determined.

Water from the Ohio River levels has covered the main track with water and while those levels are predicted to recede during the week, wet weather is expected until Thursday, April 28.

The River Downs RaceBook has suspended simulcast operations, but officials are planning to re-open the facility for full-card simulcasting on Wednesday, April 27.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, rainfall totals this month stand at 11.32 inches as of April 25, exceeding the previous record of 9.77 inches in April 1998.

The stable area at River Downs was evacuated last week in expectation of the flooding, some of which were sent to nearby Turfway Park in northern Kentucky.

It’s the second time this year River Downs was impacted by floodwaters. Earlier this year water covered the racing surfaces and made it onto the apron.
