Winter Memories will make her much anticipated 2011 debut when she faces 11 rivals in the $100,000 Appalachian Stakes (gr. IIIT) for 3-year-old fillies going a mile on the turf April 20 at Keeneland.

The Appalachian, which also drew two also-eligibles, was won last year by Check the Label. The Appalachian will go as the eighth event on a nine-race program with an approximate post time of 4:52 p.m. EDT. First post time Thursday is 1:15 p.m.

Trained by Jim Toner, Phillips Racing Partnership’s Winter Memories won her first two starts last year and closed 2010 with a runner-up finish as the favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IIT) at Churchill Downs. Jose Lezcano, who has been aboard Winter Memories in all her starts, has the call. Winter Memories will break from post 4 under co-high weight of 123 pounds.

Robert S. Evans’ New Normal, winner of the Natalma Stakes (gr. IIIT) last September at Woodbine, also will carry 123 pounds. Trained by Mark Frostad, New Normal will be making her first start since finishing eighth in the Breeders’ Juvenile Fillies Turf. Javier Castellano has the mount on New Normal, who will break from post 6.

Two undefeated fillies with ties to Keeneland stakes winners are also in the field.

Stronach Stable’s Smart Sting, a daughter of 1999 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (gr. IT) winner Perfect Sting, has won both of her starts for trainer Roger Attfield. Shaun Bridgmohan has the mount Thursday on Smart Sting, who will break from post 10 under a 117-pound impost.

Virginia Kraft Payson’s Ruthenia, a full sister to 2008 Jenny Wiley (gr. IIT) winner Rutherienne, will be making her 2011 debut for trainer Christophe Clement after winning her two grass starts last year. Alan Garcia, who was aboard for those two wins, has the call on Ruthenia, who will break from post 12 and carry 121 pounds.
