The curtain came down on the 2011 William Inglis & Son Easter broodmare sale April 14. The auction ended its three-day run in Australia with a gross of Aust$22,193,800 ($23,260,900 in U.S. funds) for the 308 horses that were sold and a clearance rate of 66.8%.

The average price of Aust$72,058 ($75,523) and median price of Aust$30,000 ($31,442) were up from 2010.

“There is no doubt that it was a very selective market here at Newmarket over the past few days,” said Inglis managing director Mark Webster. “Breeders have done a tremendous job meeting the market with yearlings this year on the back of peak production costs. It was evident, however, that this will go down as a year where they are looking to consolidate without having surplus revenue to reinvest on breeding stock.”

Isle of Gibraltar topped the auction’s final session, fetching Aust$350,000 ($366,828) from New Zealand’s Blandford Lodge. An 11-year-old winning daughter of Danehill, the mare finished second in the 2003 Vinery Stud Walter Brown Stakes and the 2004 editions of the Vinery Stud Adelaide Guineas (Aust-III) and H.C. Nitschke Stakes.

Consigned by Coolmore Stud, Isle of Gibraltar was sold in foal to High Chaparral. She is out of the Shirley Heights mare Push a Venture.
