Superior Storm, a four-time Louisiana champion, has been retired from racing to become a broodmare. The 6-year-old Stormy Atlantic mare has arrived at Robert N. Clay’s Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky., and will be bred to either Afleet Alex or Tapit . Both stallions stand at the Beck family’s Gainesway Farm near Lexington.
Campaigned by Jac Mac Stable and trained by Richard D. Jackson, Superior Storm finished first or second in 22 of 29 starts and earned $1,066,873. She captured 16 races, 13 of which were stakes, all in her native Louisiana. She was a Louisiana divisional champion at ages 2 through 4 and Horse of the Year at 3.
Superior Storm ventured out of state on occasion, running second in the Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. I) at Oaklawn Park and the Ouija Board Distaff Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Lone Star Park in consecutive starts in the spring of 2009. Another high point came when she beat champion Proud Spell in an Oaklawn Park optional claimer.
Bred by Jack Dickerson, Superior Storm is out of the stakes-placed Total Departure mare Alittlebitsuperior and is a half sister to stakes winner Taffy.
