Arizona Breeder/Owner Gene Fleming Dies

Gene Fleming, whose homebred Lonesome Creek was an Arizona champion, died Feb. 20 in the same Phoenix hospital where he was born. He was 85.

Lonesome Creek was named champion 2-year-old filly of 2009 after winning the Arizona Breeders’ Futurity and the ATBA Fall Sales Stakes. Both races were contested at Turf Paradise.

Fleming, a lifelong farmer, owned Fleming Thoroughbred Farm. He was breeder and/or owner of about a dozen stakes winners, including 2010 added-money winners Talyor and Rucker Canyon. Fleming was the breeder of Rucker Creek and the breeder/owner of Talyor.

Fleming served in numerous positions in his 50-plus years with the Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders Association. His last post was  vice president.

Fleming’s survivors include his wife of 60 years, Jodie, plus daughters Carolyn and Jolene and sons Gerald and Marvin.
