The Arkansas Racing Commission voted unanimously March 26 to approve Oaklawn Park’s request to race 56 days in 2012.

The Hot Springs, Ark., track, which concludes its current meet April 16, will reopen Jan. 13 and close April 14 next year.

Oaklawn will continue to run Thursdays through Sundays in 2012 with a few exceptions. Additional days are Monday, Jan. 16, Martin Luther King Day; Monday, Feb. 20, Presidents Day; and Wednesday, April 11, as part of the Racing Festival of the South. The track will be dark Sunday, April 8, in observance of Easter.

Oaklawn was awarded 56 days in 2011, but was forced to cancel a record eight days early in the meet due to poor track conditions from severe winter weather. To help make up some of the lost races, Oaklawn added Wednesday, April 13, to this year’s schedule.
