Evening Session Could Add Energy at Barretts
A small but select group of 2-year-olds in training will be offered at the Barretts sale March 21 in Pomona, Calif. The auction will be held in the evening for the first time and in one session.
“We did that for the yearling sale last year, and it seemed to draw a lot of energy,” said Kim Lloyd, Barretts’ vice president of sales. “It was fun.”
Established sires and new stallions will be featured in the pedigrees. Malibu Moon , the third-leading sire of 2010, has a colt and a filly in the sale.
Becky Thomas’ Sequel Bloodstock has consigned hip no. 19, a filly named Clearly Casual. By Malibu Moon out of stakes winner and stakes producer Fighting Countess, Clearly Casual previewed a quarter-mile in :21 3/5 March 18. Hebert Bloodstock has consigned the other Malibu Moon hip no. 88, a colt out of the Giant’s Causeway mare The One. The second dam, millionaire Halo America, also produced stakes winner Marino Marini.
Thomas, who has topped the March sale in years past, has the one supplemental entry to the catalog. Hip no. 106, named Weekend Update, is a daughter of Bob and John —Doctor Diane, by Regal Classic.
Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables, which sold the March sale topper in 2009 and 2010, returns with a group that includes one of three in the catalog from the first crop of champion 2-year-old male Stevie Wonderboy. The filly, hip no. 4, is a half-sister to grade II winner Siphon City.
Others from the Wavertree consignment include hip no. 80, a half-brother to Humana Distaff Stakes (gr. I) winner Mona de Momma (by El Corredor ). The colt breezed a furlong in :10 at the preview, equaling the fastest time with 12 other youngsters.
Many in the catalog came out of Kentucky yearling sales, with two selling for $130,000 apiece. Wavertree consigns hip no. 30, a son of Corinthian out of stakes winner and stakes producer Hollow Miss. The colt brought that amount at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July select sale. Callaway Thoroughbreds will offer the other $130,000 yearling, hip no. 96, a son of Congrats out of stakes-placed White Ruffle. The colt was one of the 13 who previewed an eighth in :10, and he came out of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October sale.
Another to preview in :10 was hip no. 16, the only horse in the sale by champion sprinter Speightstown . Eddie Woods has consigned the son of the grade II-winning mare Enjoy the Moment.
Candy Ride , who has sired major California winners Twirling Candy, Sidney’s Candy, and Misremembered, has one horse in the catalog. Scott A. Bergsrud’s SAB Sales is offering Candy and Thunder, hip no. 83, out of the Thunder Gulch mare Start the Thunder.
The sale will be held at the Hinds Pavilion at Fairplex Park and will begin at 7 p.m. (PDT) March 21. It follows a wine-tasting reception, where equine artist Fred Stone will sign his book Reflections on a Golden Age. A live auction of three of Stone’s prints will be held at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from the auction and book sales will benefit The Learning Centers at Fairplex, a not-for-profit group that provides educational programs to the community.
