Despite Uncertainty, Monmouth Unveils Stakes
Despite uncertainty over its 2011 racing calendar, Monmouth Park March 15 unveiled a $4.2 million stakes schedule that encompasses the core of its proposed meet.
The New Jersey racetrack has scheduled the $1 million Haskell Invitational (gr. I) for 3-year-olds for Sunday, July 31. Seven other stakes are slated for that program.
The $750,000 United Nations Handicap (gr. IT) is set for July 2, and the $250,000 Molly Pitcher Stakes (gr. II) for Aug. 28. The other stakes on the calendar are either grade III or listed events.
Monmouth announced opening day of May 14. The New Jersey Racing Commission will meet March 18 to discuss the upcoming meet, which could be run by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority or a lessee.
By statute Monmouth was awarded 141 days of racing for 2011, though that could change. Horsemen have said they would accept fewer days—similar to the 2010 schedule—if purses are maintained at a high level.
Clearly, the overnight purse structure will be dictated by number of racing days. Also, there currently is no purse supplement, as there was in 2010.
Monmouth usually releases a schedule of lesser-monied stakes at a later date.
Stall applications for the meet are due March 16, officials said.
The stakes schedule released March 15 follows:
Monday, May 30 Violet Stakes (gr. III), $150,000, F&M 3YO&UP, 1 1/16 miles (T)
