Daniel C. Stearns III, an Ohio veterinarian who served on a number of important Ohio racing organizations, has died. He was 89.

Stearns, an Army veteran and a practicing vet until the time of his death, was a past president of the Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners and served on the Ohio Thoroughbred Race Fund. For 10 years, he was president of the Ohio-Waterford Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association.

Stearns was the breeder of several stakes winners, including homebred Able Craft. He was a regular contributor to the Horsemen’s Journal and served as the magazine’s secretary.

Stearns was so highly thought of in the Buckeye State racing community that the OTBO put in a request to the Ohio State Racing Commission to have the Cleveland Gold Cup be renamed the Daniel Stearns Cleveland Gold Cup.

Preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, Stearns’ survivors include a son, Daniel IV.
