Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Drosselmeyer and multiple graded stakes placed local Schoolyard Dreams headline the $60,000 Challenger Stakes March 5 at Tampa Bay Downs.
Drosselmeyer makes his first start in the 1 1/16-mile main track test since winning the Belmont last June. The 4-year-old son of Distorted Humor
, owned WinStar Farm and trained by Bill Mott, has recorded a string of bullet workouts at Payson Park in preparation for his season debut. He was taken out of training after the Belmont and was originally being pointed toward a return in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) before the connections changed plans because a fever caused him to miss some training time recently. The 2-1 morning-line favorite drew post 8 in a field of 11.
Joining Drosselmeyer is Schoolyard Dreams, runner-up in the 2010 Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) and Sam F. Davis (gr. III). The Stephen Got Even
colt, who finished ninth in the Preakness (gr. I), comes off of an allowance win at Tampa Feb. 6 and has never finished worse than third in his five starts over the Oldsmar oval for owners Eric Fein and Anthony Mitola, and trainer Derek Ryan. Surprisingly, he is 8-1 on the morning line.
Also lined up for the Challenger is Colizeo
, a 4-year-old son of Distorted Humor carrying the colors of owner-breeder Wertheimer and Frere and trained by Todd Pletcher. Colizeo is a specialist at 1 1/16 miles, having finished in the money five times from seven starts at the distance.
