Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course has announced its 2011 stakes schedule featuring a record 21 added-money events with guaranteed purses totaling $1.975 million. The calendar includes 12 open stakes and nine Pennsylvania-bred restricted races. Eight of the stakes are scheduled to be run over the grass.
A trio of $75,000 sprint races over the main track kickoff the stakes season on Friday night, May 27.
Penn National’s annual Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup Racing Festival will be held July 29-30, with $800,000 in stakes slated for the weekend.
Four races for fillies and mares, with three on the grass, are slated for Friday, July 29. The festival highlight is the 39th running of the $200,000 Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup over five furlongs on the turf on July 30.
Four stakes, including the inaugural running of the Six Bits, will be held on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, November 23. Three $75,000 races will also be on that card.
“We appreciate the enthusiasm our local horsemen demonstrated in helping us nearly double our stakes program from last year”, said Mark Loewe, vice president of racing,” and the addition of the $200,000 Six Bits Sprint in the fall gives us a second marquee event on the annual calendar.”
