Dr. Mark Dedomenico has been added to the board of directors of the Thoroughbred Owners of California to fill a vacancy created by the recent resignation of Arnold Zetcher.
The board voted unanimously Feb. 28 to appoint Dedomenico, a cardiovascular surgeon and researcher who played a key role in the development of coronary bypass surgery.
Following in the footsteps of his father, who raced multiple stakes winners on the West Coast for many years, Dedomenico has more than 50 runners in training. They include 2010 Eclipse Award champion 3-year-old filly Blind Luck, co-owned with trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and partners John Carver and Peter Abruzzo. He also breeds a limited number of mares.
Dedomenico was instrumental in the development of the artificial aortic heart valve and Bionit arterial grafts that are used around the world to replace damaged or atherosclerotic arteries. He is a founding member of Hope Heart Institute in Seattle, Wash. He owns and operates the 45,000-member PRO Sports Health Club, where he has carried out extensive research in the field of metabolic disorders such as high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes, the main cause of heart disease. He is also involved in the research and treatment of obesity.
At his Pegasus Thoroughbred Training and Rehabilitation center in Redmond, Wash., he and Dr. Wayne McIlwraith of Colorado State University are researching new treatments for equine middle and lower knee injuries as well as researching the use of platelet rich plasma and stem cell therapy. A native of San Francisco, Calif., he currently resides in Las Vegas, Nev.
“The board is pleased to welcome Mark to our membership, given his admirable commitment to the industry in general and to the latest research on equine medicine in particular,” said TOC chairman Jack Owens. “We look forward to integrating his views into our board discussions.”
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve for an organization so committed to the advancement of owners’ interests and those of the industry in general,” said Dedomenico. “And I look forward to assisting the board in any way possible.”
