Times Sizzle in F-T Sale's Under Tack Show
If the results of the under tack show Feb. 28 were any indication, the Fasig-Tipton Florida select sale of 2-year-olds in training is in the process of making a successful transition to its new home, Palm Meadows Training Center in Boynton Beach. The times were sizzling and there were no major mishaps on a partly cloudy day with temperatures in the low 80s and a brisk crosswind.
“It was fantastic,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “We clearly had an outstanding group of horses that breezed well and everybody appears to have gotten home safe. Consignors raved about the quality of the track today and buyers were very, very positive about the way the horses breezed.”
A More Than Ready filly was the fastest worker at an eighth of a mile on dirt, covering the distance in a blistering :9 3/5 as onlookers gasped in amazement. The time equaled the world record for a sale of 2-year-olds in training. Consigned by SGV Thoroughbreds, agent for W.D. North Thoroughbreds, the dark bay or brown juvenile is the first foal out of the unraced Unbridled's Song mare Spring Unbridled. The filly’s dam is a half sister to the added-money winner Kid Mambo (by Lemon Drop Kid ).
A Stevie Wonderboy filly and an Empire Maker colt set the pace at a quarter mile, each stopping the clock in :21 3/5.
The Stevie Wonderboy filly, who is a member of her sire’s first crop, is out of the stakes-winning Afleet mare Tina Fleet and is a half sister to the stakes-placed winner See Sami Run (by Holy Bull). The chestnut 2-year-old’s consignor is Casse Sales, agent for Kelynack Farm.
The Empire Maker colt is the first foal out of the Smart Strike mare Angel Arch, who is a full sister to grade II winner Tenpins and a half sister to three other added-money winners: Dust Around (by Geiger Counter), It’s a Sweep (by Jade Hunter), and Overide Battle (by Conquistador Cielo). The bay juvenile’s consignors are Hoby and Layna Kight, agents.
“The track was extremely fair; the horses loved it,” said Justin Casse of Casse Sales. “My horses that I expected to breeze well did breeze well and the track was even throughout the day. I don’t think the sun or the heat or the humidity or anything else really affected the track. From 10 o’clock in the morning until 5 o’clock in the afternoon, the track remained the same. It was consistent.”
Palm Meadows’ 1 1/8-mile main track is surfaced with topsoil that has a 12.25% clay content.
On the grass, a Medaglia d'Oro colt was the quickest at an eighth of a mile with a time of :9 4/5. Consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, agent, the dark bay or brown 2-year-old is out of the winning Darshaan mare Bubbling Heights and is a half brother to grade III winner J’ray (by Distant View).
An English Channel colt, who is a member of his sire’s first crop, appeared to glide effortlessly through the fastest quarter mile move on turf in :20 4/5. Fasig-Tipton’s director of marketing, Terence Collier, who served as the announcer for the under tack show, described the bay 2-year-old’s performance as “sensational.”
Consigned by Off The Hook, agent, the colt is out of the grade III-winning Cozzene mare Reach the Top and is a half brother to grade III winner Changing World (by Spinning World).
Collier could not recall any workout times at the Fasig-Tipton auction’s former site, Calder Casino & Race Course, that were as fast or faster than the English Channel colt’s or the More Than Ready filly’s.
The under tack show attracted a large crowd that filled nearly all of the 350 seats in a temporary covered grandstand and 100 stools positioned on the front stretch near the entrance to the track’s first turn. Those in attendance included Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock manager, John Ferguson; Coolmore Stud agent Demi O’Byrne; Kentucky bloodstock agent John Moynihan, whose clients included Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke; and trainers Neil Drysdale, Barclay Tagg, Kiaran McLaughlin, and John Ward.
The Fasig-Tipton auction is scheduled for March 3 at Palm Meadows. Selling will begin at 11 a.m. (EST).
