Two West Coast contenders for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) sizzled in workouts at different tracks the morning of Feb. 28.

At Santa Anita, Zayat Stables’ grade I winner Jaycito zipped five furlongs in :58 3/5, third-fastest time of the day for 53 horses working that distance over a fast track. Jaycito is being pointed toward his first start of 2011 and first outing since been relocated to Bob Baffert’s barn. He was trained last year by Mike Mitchell.

The 3-year-old son of Victory Gallop broke his maiden in the grade I Norfolk Stakes, his lone victory along with two second-place efforts from four starts.

Meanwhile, at Hollywood Park Comma to the Top worked five furlongs in a quick :58 4/5 (second best among 34 at the distance) for Peter Miller, who trains the Bwana Charlie gelding for the partnership of Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum, and Kevin Tsujihara.

A seasoned competitor with 11 starts to date, Comma to the Top has six wins and a second to his credit. Last year, he went on a five-race win streak that culminated with a victory in the CashCall Futurity (gr. I). In his 2011 debut, Comma to the Top drifted in the stretch while finishing fourth as the 1-2 favorite in the El Camino Real Derby (gr. III)  at Golden Gate Fields.
