A strained ligament in the left foreleg has sidelined turf star King Cugat for the rest of the year and means the 4-year-old son of Kingmambo will miss the Breeders' Cup Turf.

Dr. Steven Carr, manager of horse operations for Centennial Farms, which races King Cugat, said the injury was apparently sustained during the colt's second-place finish as the favorite in Saturday's Turf Classic Invitational.

"It is not career threatening, just an untimely injury," said Carr, who noted that King Cugat previously had problems with the same ligament. Carr said an ultrasound examination performed Monday showed that "none of the other structures in the area are affected."

The winner of seven of 16 starts with earnings of $1,293,782 for trainer Bill Mott, King Cugat has three grade II wins to his credit while finishing second in grade I company five times.
