Lailani, bred in Great Britain, is by Unfuwain, winner of six of 10 career starts in the late 1980s. The son of Northern Dancer won two group II and two group III events in his career and earned $489,367.

Unfuwain was the highweighted colt at age 3 on the French Free Handicap and the European Free Handicap at 11 to 14 furlongs. Among his best progeny are Kashwan, champion colt at ages 2 and 3 in Spain in 1996 and 1997, respectively; French-bred Fado, a winner of 10 of 31 career starts; and Irish-bred Alhaarth, winner of the group I Generous Dewhurst in England in 1995, and the highweighted older horse at age 4 on the Irish Free Handicap at seven to 9 1/2 furlongs in 1997.

Unfuwain is a full brother to stakes winner Alwasmi, and a half-brother to stakes winners Nashwan, Nayef, Mukddaam, and Sarayir.

Lailani's dam, Lailati, is by Mr. Prospector out of the Minstrelete mare Carduel. Lailati, foaled in 1990, has produced six foals, with four starters and four winners.

The colt Copper Carnival, by Petit Loup, won the listed Prix Rene Bedel in France in 2000. Elegant Fellow, by Green Desert, has won three races in Hong Kong in his career. Lailani is the most accomplished of Lailati's foals.
