Pedigree Profile: Tranquility Lake
Pedigree (PDF format)While Tranquility Lake has spent the better part of her career racing on turf, the 6-year-old mare has the kind of versatile pedigree that shows why she is a proven commodity on both dirt and turf. Her sire, Rahy, was accomplished on both surfaces, as was her dam, Winter's Love (by Danzig).Bred in Kentucky by North Central Bloodstock, Tranquility Lake was purchased by Martin and Pam Wygod for $250,000 out of the 1996 Keeneland July yearling sale. Tranquility Lake is a half-sister to one other stakes winner, Benchmark (by Alydar), who won the Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap, Del Mar Breeders' Cup Handicap, and San Bernardino Handicap (all gr. II) in 1997. Both Benchmark and Tranquility Lake have made their marks by racing on the West Coast.Winter's Love was bred in Kentucky by Mr. and Mrs. James P. Ryan's Ryehill Farm. She was sold, in foal to Ogygian, for $325,000 in 1988. The Ryan's dispersed of all their breeding stock in 1990.Winter's Love was precocious enough to place in a pair of graded stakes in New York as a 2-year-old in 1984. She finished third in both the Astarita Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont (behind Mom's Command) and in the Schuylerville Stakes (gr. III) behind Weekend Delight. She also placed in two other stakes, both minor events run on turf. While being a daughter of Danzig, which means she could have been any kind of runner, the majority of her siblings excelled going longer distances.Out of the stakes-winning mare Cold Hearted (by Mahmoud's son The Axe II), Winter's Love is a half-brother to classic winner Caveat. By Cannonade, Caveat won the 1983 Belmont Stakes, the second of five consecutive Belmont winners for trainer Woody Stephens. Third in that year's Kentucky Derby (gr. I), Caveat won two other stakes and placed in five other graded stakes. Another half-brother, Dew Line, also by Cannonade, earned $413,748 while winning the Razorback Handicap (gr. II) and placing in a host of graded turf events around two turns. Winter Love's full sister, the stakes-winning Baltic Chill, won a pair of stakes on the Maryland circuit.Tranquility Lake's sire, Rahy, is also the sire of two other World Thoroughbred Championship candidates: Noverre and Fantastic Light. Noverre, a group I-winning miler in England is likely to be one of the favorites for the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT). Fantastic Light, the top older horse in Europe this year, is scheduled to go in the 10-furlong Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I).By Blushing Groom (Nasrullah line), Rahy is out of Canadian Horse of the Year Glorious Song, who is the dam of Singspiel, champion grass horse in North America in 1996. He has yet to sire a Breeders' Cup winner, but has sired runners-up Serena's Song (2nd in the '96 Distaff) and Hawksley Hill (2nd in the '98 Mile).
