Giant Oak Named Illinois Horse of the Year
Daniel Sullivan, president of The Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Foundation, announced Feb. 14 that Giant Oak had been named the state’s 2010 Horse of the Year and champion older handicap male. Trained by Chris Block for Virginia Tarra Trust, Giant Oak holds a record of 5-5-3 from 24 starts and has earned more than $1.2 million during his career. The son of Giant's Causeway is out of the Crafty Prospector mare Crafty Oak, who was named Illinois’ broodmare of the year. Other divisional awards, which were voted on by members of the state’s racing media and racing secretaries, are as follows: Luck With A Kiss, 2-year-old male St. Maximus Gato, 2-year-old male Dundalk Dust, 3-year-old female and turf female Kathleen L, older handicap female and sprint female Amazing Results, turf male Denham, male claimer Pretty Slic Chick, female claimer Dana Waier Thoroughbreds, small breeder Richard and Gail Radke, persons of the year
