Dick’s Picks Feb. 10

Dick Powell has handicapped every race since the Dubai International Racing Carnival’s inception in 2004. He sets the morning line for the Carnival races and his selections and analysis can be found at www.amwestentertainment.com

Race 1: Dubal Imtiaz Trophy Handicap
About 7 Furlongs on the Tapeta main track
$110,000 for Northern Hemisphere 4 & Up and Southern Hemisphere 3 & Up
For horses rated 95-105

This race will start on a chute on the backstretch and will be run around one turn. This is a very tightly-grouped bunch of handicap horses that are all within 3 pounds of each other. INDOMITO (Areion) raced well in Germany against group company then made his UAE debut last out with a good fourth going this distance while carrying more weight. ATLANTIC SPORT (Machiavellian) was no match for the classy OUR GIANT two starts back but ran much better here last out going a mile when stuck behind a slow pace. MONTMORENCY (Pivotal) won his last start on the Tapeta here in December and ran well here last out in a higher handicap race behind the red-hot HAPPY DUBAI.
Selections:
#2     INDOMIITO
#1     ATLANTIC SPORT
#11   MONTMORENCY

Race 2: Dubal Casthouse Trophy Handicap
About 1 3/8 Miles on the Tapeta main track
$120,000 for Northern Hemisphere 4 & Up and Southern Hemisphere 3 & Up
For horses rated 100-110

This race will be run around two turns with a long run into the first turn. ONCE MORE DUBAI (E Dubai) won one of these here last year at this distance carrying more weight than today. He was a good second going ten furlongs on the turf here last out and gets Frankie Dettori. BURDLAZ (Indian Ridge) was no match for the classy ROCK N ROLL RANSOM two starts back here then improved last out going this distance with a good third. Takes off weight and switches to Ajtebi. HUNTING TOWER (Fort Wood) is a 9YO that might have seen better days but his last race here on the turf was solid and he gets Soumillon.
Selections:
#3   ONCE MORE DUBAI
#4   BURDLAZ
#2   HUNTING TOWER

Race 3: Dubal Potlines Trophy Handicap
About 1 3/16 Miles on the Tapeta main track.
$110,000 for Northern Hemisphere 4 & Up and Southern Hemisphere 3 & Up
For horses rated 95-105

This race will be run around two turns on the main track. GOLDEN SWORD (High Chaparral) was a good second here last out going a mile from post 14 and was only beaten less than a length in his Tapeta debut. He only picks up a pound off that race and draws much better today with Soumillon back for de Kock. FINAL DRIVE (Viking Ruler) won at this distance two starts back in Great Britain then was a good third here going a mile when stuck behind a slow pace. He gets a major rider switch to Ryan Moore and should be fit in his second start off the layoff. DEAR BELA (Indygo Shiner) broke his maiden by five lengths in his career debut then came back to finish second in a group one going ten furlongs. He’s been off for over a year but bin Suroor has no trouble having them ready first out.
Selections:
#1   GOLDEN SWORD
#7   FINAL DRIVE
#11 DEAR BELA

Race 4: Dubal Trophy Handicap
About 5 furlongs on the turf
$175,000 for Northern Hemisphere 4 & Up and Southern Hemisphere 3 & Up
For horses rated 100+
This race will be run down the straightaway on the turf. The low post positions are farthest away from the grandstand. INVINCIBLE ASH (Invincible Spirit) won a listed stakes race on the all-weather at Dundalk then came here and was a good fifth against similar. He was a listed turf stakes winner last summer in Ireland so he’ll go over anything as long as it’s a sprint. MONSIEUR JOE (Choisir) just missed here last out going five furlongs in very fast time and should be tough again. HAPPY DUBAI (Indian Ridge) has won two straight but picks up 7 pounds off his last win and loses Frankie.
Selections:
#5    INVINCIBLE ASH
#8    MONSIEUR JOE
#1    HAPPY DUBAI

Race 5: Firebreak Stakes (listed) sponsored by Dubal
About 1 Mile on the Tapeta main track
$175,000 for Northern Hemisphere 4 & Up and Southern Hemisphere 3 & Up
This race will start out of a chute down the backstretch and will be run around one turn. Use the www.emiratesracing.com web site to get the individual ratings of all the horses in these races. Run under weight-for-ages conditions, the higher rated horses have a big advantage in here. In this race, program numbers equals post positions. MUSIR (Redoute’s Choice) was a monster here last year when he swept all three races on the main track for 3YOs. He romped in the UAE Derby (G2) beating MENDIP who looked great winning the first round of the Maktoum Challenge (G3) here opening night. Will be very hard to beat at level weights even from post 13. GAYEGO (Gilded Time) rallied nicely to just miss in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) last out at Churchill. He won a listed stake on the Tapeta at Presque Isle two starts back so he should have no trouble here. BANKABLE (Medicean) is a turf runner that ran well in his Tapeta debut last out going six furlongs and has done his best running going a mile. He draws inside and gets Ryan Moore back.
Selections:
#13   MUSIR
#14   GAYEGO
#2     BANKABLE

Race 6:  UAE 2000 Guineas (G3) sponsored by Dubal
About 1 Mile on the Tapeta main track
$250,000 Northern Hemisphere & Southern Hemisphere 3YO

Use the www.emiratesracing.com web site to get the individual ratings of all the horses in these races. Run under weight-for-ages conditions, the higher rated horses have a big advantage in here. In this race, program numbers equals post positions.  ZANZAMAR (Fort Wood) won the prep for this race by a length in a grinding effort and should be much fitter back at a mile. Richard Hills rides back for de Kock. BUFFUM (Bernardini) looked like a good one last year when he broke his maiden first time out going a mile at Belmont then was no match for TO HONOR AND SERVE in a grade two stake next out. SPLASH POINT (Street Cry) ran well on the all-weather last year at Kempton then came here with a good second last out when he had the lead for much of the stretch. Bred to go a lot longer.
Selections:
#7     ZANZAMAR
#8     BUFFUM
#11   SPLASH POINT

Race 7: Dubal Excellence Trophy Handicap
About 1 1/8 Miles on the turf
$150,000 Northern Hemisphere 4 & Up and Southern Hemisphere 3 & Up
For horses rated 95+

This race is run down a long backstretch and around one turn. IRISH FLAME (Dynasty) is so good he beat BOLD SILVANO last summer in South Africa and you saw how good he was last week. He was no match for PRESVIS in his UAE debut but should be much fitter from that effort and draws well. RAIHANA (Elusive Quality) won the Oaks here last season on the Tapeta and raced wide here last out going a mile when she drew post 12. She draws better today and gets Soumillon back. KINGSFORT (War Chant) was beaten at 7-5 here last out behind the red-hot DERBAAS going a mile and drops seven pounds here.
Selections:
#1    IRISH FLAME
#3    RAIHANA
#2    KINGSFORT
