Owner Donald Ford Dies

Donald G. Ford Sr. a successful owner and trainer during the 1950s and ’60s, died in November. A  World War II veteran, he was 84.

A car dealer and real estate developer, Ford owned and operated Ironwood Farm near Louisville. At the height of his operation, Ford owned an average of 40 to 50 horses and kept 25 to 30 in training. His best horse was Iron Rail, who won four stakes, all at 2 in 1960. Iron Rail’s big win came in the Juvenile Stakes in New York over a field that included subsequent champion 2-year-old male Hail to Reason.

Ford’s survivors include two sons and a daughter.
