Triple Crown Bloodstock's Publication raced up close through slow opening fractions, inherited the lead when pacesetter Lunar Bounty tired, then held on to win Saturday's $150,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity (gr. II) by a neck at Arlington Park. Under Randall Meier, Publication completed the one-mile race in 1:38.78 on a fast track.

"The pace was very slow," said Meier. "Once he made the lead, he went to looking around. He's not a really big colt, but he felt strong. When I called him, he got his head in front pretty easy. He was loafing a little bit and I think he had another gear if he got challenged again. For a colt that had only run once at 5 1/2 furlongs to come back and run a mile, he's got a lot of potential."

Should Publication show that potential by winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I), he will earn his owner a $250,000 bonus he became eligible for by winning Saturday's race.

It'sallinthechase, a 17-1 longshot, charged up from the back of the back to finish second, three-quarters of a length clear of 6-5 favorite Dubai Squire. Major Storm, Tinker, No Trouble, and Lunar Bounty completed the order of finish.

The Terry Knight-trained Publication is now undefeated from two career starts. Everest Stables Inc bred the 2-year-old son of Petionville in Kentucky.

Publication paid $12.20, $5.80, and $3.40. It'sallinthechase returned $11 and $4 and completed the $185.20 exacta. Dubai Squire returned $2.40. (Chart, Equibase)
