“Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby,” an online auction of exclusive handcrafted Kentucky Derby Hats, continues Feb. 1 with “The Marquetry,” the fourth hat in a series of six chapeaus to be auctioned.

The hats have been created by custom millinery Sally Faith Steinmann of Maggie Mae Designs® and 100% of the online proceeds will benefit Old Friends, the non-profit organization in Central Kentucky dedicated to the dignified retirement of former racehorses.

Steinmann has created six hats, each inspired by one of the champions retired at Old Friends, and one will be auctioned each month leading up to this year’s Kentucky Derby May 7.

This month’s hat is “The Marquetry,” a unique design of different tones and textures that honors the major stakes winner. The centerpiece of “The Marquetry” is a rose curl created in a mix of blue-green and pink tones that is delicately framed by a medley of shantung leaves. Glistening chocolate organdy ribbon loops provide the finishing touch.

Hats off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby will offer a new creation for bid each month through April 2011.
