Quarantine Lifted at Gulfstream

Gulfstream Park announced Jan. 27 it has lifted a quarantine at one barn at the track and four others at its training facility at Palm Meadows.

An unidentified horse from the barn of trainer Jonathan Sheppard showed symptoms of possible neurological problems, prompting the quarantine. On Jan.26, Gulfstream flew the samples from the horse to the University of Kentucky in Lexington. On the afternoon of Jan. 27, tests at UK proved negative for EHV-1.

“We took swift action to test the samples in the interest of the horses,” said Gulfstream president and GM Steve Calabro. “We’re glad the test came back negative and the quarantine was lifted.”

Gulfstream officials said no other horses at Gulfstream, in Hallandale Beach, Fla.,  or at Palm Meadows, in Boynton Beach, Fla., are showing symptoms similar to those of the Sheppard horse.

MI Developments owns Gulfstream  and Palm Meadows, which is 40 miles north of Gulfstream.
