(Edited William Inglis & Son press release)
Competition for better class yearlings heated up on the second day of the William Inglis & Son Sydney Classic yearling sale in Australia Jan. 24, with four horses fetching Aust$100,000 ($98,895 in U.S. funds) or more apiece.
The cumulative sale gross following the second session was Aust$8,901,500 ($8,803,140). The total for the second day alone was Aust$5,226,500 ($5,168,750).
Colts by General Nediym and Fastnet Rock topped the second session, each fetching Aust$130,000 ($128,563).
Bert Veira secured Edinglassie Stud’s General Nediym colt out of the Woodman mare Shannon Wood. The colt is a half brother to group I-placed Miss Lily Rose and stakes-placed Road To Athens. They are from the family of group I Canterbury Guineas and Underwood Stakes winner Sharscay.
Hawkes Racing purchased Brooklyn Lodge’s Fastnet Rock colt out of Razzia, a full-sister to group I winners Universal Prince and Universal Queen.
The highest-priced filly sold, at Aust$120,000 ($118,675), is by Excellent Art. Les Bridge, whose mare Hot Danish won a barrier trial stylishly earlier in the day, was her buyer.
Consigned by Wimmera Park, the filly is out of the group III-winning mare Starry Way, who has produced five winners.
A Not A Single Doubt – Arhtur’s Lass colt from the consignment of Bell River Thoroughbreds brought Aust$100,000. Inglis reported that the buyer was "R. Barry."
The 159 yearlings that were sold during the second session averaged Aust$32,871 ($32,508). The median was Aust$26,000 ($25,713). The clearance rate was 79.5%.
“Once again there was very good competition from a diverse buying bench,” said Inglis bloodstock director Jonathan D‘Arcy said. “It has been a very even sale for both buyers and vendors so far, with the figures slightly up on last year which is pleasing given the catalog is 10% larger.”
The cumulative sale average is Aust$33,464 ($33,094) for the 266 yearlings that have been sold. The median is Aust$27,500 ($27,196). The clearance rate is 79.9%.
