Injured Jockey McManigell May Return Soon

Apprentice jockey Kristina McManigell, injured in a Jan. 17 racing accident at Parx Racing in Pennsylvania, may be discharged from the University of Pennsylvania hospital Jan. 21.

Officials said McManigell was transferred to the Philadelphia hospital Jan. 20 but was up and walking. She has a hairline fracture of her C-6 vertebrae and some swelling from the fall, but could be back riding in a few weeks.

McManigell was taken to Aira Health Hospital in northeast Philadelphia after her mount, High Fly Amore, broke down and fell while leading a field of $7,500 claimers at Parx.

McManigell, 21, is a native of West Salem, Ill., and a graduate of the North American Riding Academy in Lexington. Through Jan. 17 at Parx, McManigell was tied for fifth position in the jockey standings with seven winners from 36 starters.
