Martin Stiles, who owned Stockwell Farm near Paris, Ky., with his wife, Martha, died Jan. 16 in Lexington. He was 83.

Stiles was the breeder of several stakes winners, including multiple stakes winner Buckys Solution, Canada's champion 2-year-old filly in 1991. He also bred full brothers and stakes winners House of Erin, Castle Green, and Hard Green. The last two-named were English group winners.

Stiles, a chemist by profession who taught at the University of Kentucky and the University of Michigan, authored an article in The Blood-Horse on improving the breed. He concluded that “improving the breed would be well served by establishing and maintaining a purse structure that disproportionately rewards the winners of the very best races (grade/group I), and forbids race-day medication in those races.”

Stiles’ survivors include his wife and a sister.
