The probable field for Sunday's $1-million Haskell Invitational Handicap (gr. I) at Monmouth Park continues to grow, with Dogwood Stable announcing Monday that Impeachment could be added to the 1 1/8-mile race. According to Dogwood's Mary Jane Howell, the third-place finisher in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes was scheduled to ship to New Jersey from Saratoga on Monday (contingent upon weather), along with Haskell contender More Than Ready. Both colts are trained by Todd Pletcher, who sent out another 3-year-old, Tom Fool Stakes (gr. II) winner Trippi, for a five-furlong breeze in 1:03.02. The son of End Sweep who defeated older horses in the Tom Fool is scheduled to run in Friday's six-furlong Amsterdam Stakes (gr. III) at Saratoga.
Meanwhile, Ohio Derby (gr. II) winner Milwaukee Brew drilled five furlongs in 1:02.40 at Woodbine Racecourse on Monday in his last serious workout before the Haskell. Trained by Tino Attard for Frank Stronach, Milwaukee Brew was scheduled to leave Canada about 7:00 p.m. (EDT) Monday for the van ride to Oceanport, N. J. Michael McCarthy, who was in the irons for the Ohio Derby win, will ride the colt again on Saturday. "Mr. Stronach called and said put McCarthy on; so McCarthy is riding," trainer Tino Attard said.
Also working toward the Haskell was Belmont Stakes winner Commendable, who was timed in :59.85 for a five-furlong work over Saratoga's Oklahoma training track, which was labeled muddy. The D. Wayne Lukas trainee's final time was the fastest of the day among eight working that distance. "He was merely breezing," said the Hall of Fame conditioner. "I was genuinely impressed with the time and the way he did it. We're going to have a say in the 3-year-old honors."
David Bell trainee Kiss a Native -- son of 1993 Haskell winner Kissin Kris, also trained by Bell -- will work at Woodbine later this week and then ship to New Jersey. Others likely for the Haskell include Thistyranthasclass, Dixie Union, Captain Steve, and Mercaldo.
