Jim Jackson, whose horse Valhol finished first in the 1999 Arkansas Derby (gr. II) but later was disqualified, died Jan. 8 at his Rockdale, Texas, home. He was 57.

A maiden going into the Arkansas Derby, Valhol won the 1 1/8-mile race by 4 1/2 lengths and then finished unplaced in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Several days after the Run for the Roses, Valhol was disqualified from his Arkansas Derby score after it was determined that his rider had carried an electrical device during the race. As an older runner, Valhol won four stakes.

Jackson, who owned Valhalla Farm near Rockdale, raced graded stakes winners Allen’s Oop and Yessirgeneralsir.

Jackson’s survivors include his wife, Janelle, and several children.
