The Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association has honored longtime president Sam Gordon as man of the year, while Herb Elkins got the organization’s lifetime achievement award.
The awards were announced at the Dec. 16 Florida HBPA membership dinner meeting.
Gordon, a longtime Florida owner, has been Florida HBPA president for six years and was honored for his outstanding leadership and peerless negotiating skills.
Elkins, a Florida HBPA board member since 1998, was the longtime contract committee chairman responsible for negotiating all purse contracts. Elkins owns horses in partnership with his wife, running horses under Ione and HJ Elkins.
