Norma Arnold, Raced Bally Ache, Dies

Norma Bradley Arnold, mother of Central Kentucky horseman Doug Arnold, died Dec. 4 at her Versailles, Ky., home. The Lexington native was 87.

Arnold, who served in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) during World War II, was married to lawyer Joseph Arnold. They were members of a syndicate that won the 1960 Preakness Stakes with Bally Ache. The son of Ballydam won the middle classic in the name of Joseph Arnold’s Turfland.

Norma Arnold’s survivors not only include Doug, owner of Buck Pond Farm near Versailles, but another son, Ernie, and a daughter, Nonie. Joseph Arnold died in 1991, and their son, Joseph Jr., died in 1969.

Visitation will be 3:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, at Milwards Funeral Home, 159 North Broadway, Lexington. A Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Dec. 8, at the Versailles Presbyterian Church, Versailles.
