The artistic skills of Smarty Jones  , Big Brown   and Curlin   brought in big donations for the horse retirement charity ReRun during its just-concluded online auction. Paintings created by those Thoroughbred champions all topped four figures with Smarty Jones’ “Moneigh” going for the auction-best $3,141.57.

Moneighs are original, abstract paintings created by a horse, using his muzzle, whiskers, hoof and tail. Some clever horses such as Funny Cide and Cigar also used paint brushes held in their teeth. The finished Moneighs are adorned with a lock of the artistic horse’s mane.

ReRun’s pre-holiday auction included works by 21 horses, most of them past champions. Featuring a prominent black hoofprint, the purple and red abstract by Smarty Jones attracted 31 bidders who drove up the price to more than $3,000 in the closing hour Dec. 5. Big Brown’s red and blue painting brought in $1,375. Curlin’s earth-toned work sold for $1,000.

Other prominent horse-artists also drew big closing bids including Cigar ($930), Congaree   ($870), Funny Cide ($660), A.P. Indy ($660), Point Given   ($590), and Giacomo   ($510).

Besides the paintings, ReRun also offers Moneigh notecards featuring paintings by famous horses. The current “Girl Power” assortment ($18 for 12 cards) includes Moneighs by Zenyatta, Serena’s Song, Silverbulletday, Rags to Riches and Fleet Indian. For more information, click on www.rerun.org.
