The Arqana Breeding Stock sale continued outpacing last year’s sale through the second day of the four-day auction at Deauville.

Gross sales were €3,771,000 (US$5,057,480), up 8% over the comparable session of 2009, and the average increased by 19.7% to €21,085 ($28,278). The median was up from €13,000 ($17,435) to €16,000 ($21,458), showing an elevation of the sale overall. Only the clearance rate slipped to 70%, a sign of the selectivity of the market.

The cumulated turnover for the first two sessions already exceeds last year’s four-day total (€13,722,500) by over a million euros, reaching €15,115,500 ($20,272,200). The cumulative average to date of €41,951 ($56,263) is tracking 20.6% ahead of last year through the second day.

Top price Dec. 5 was achieved by Shemissa (lot 471), who sold for €130,000 ($174,350) to Crispin de Moubray, a French-based buyer and representative of the Aga Khan Studs.

The Fairy King mare was the only one in the sale to carry a covering to German champion sire Monsun. She is out of Prix de Diane Hermes  (Fr-I, French Oaks) winner Shemaka, who has turned into a remarkable blue hen, producing four black type winners or performers. She is the granddam of Shemiyla and the great granddam of Shimraan,  both group winners of 2010.

Shemissa herself has already produced a group I performer in Shediak, who ran third in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère-Grand Criterium before being shipped across the Atlantic. She is now with trainer Ben Cecil.

Masque Rose (lot 415), a winning daughter of Oasis Dream in foal to Muhtathir, topped Blandford Bloodstock’s shopping list on day two at €125,000 ($167,644). Offered by Haras de Meautry, she hails from a great Niarchos family as her second dam is a full sister to Miesque.

After two days of selling, Tom Goff’s and Richard Brown’s bloodstock agency sits in second position on the buyers’ list, having spent over a million euros for 14 lots.

The sale continues through Dec. 7 and starts each day at 11 a.m.
