Eight-Year-Old Chorwon Earns First Graded Stakes Win

Phoebe Mueller's 8-year-old gelding Chorwon earned his seventh career stakes win and his first in a graded stakes, winning the 1 1/2-mile, $300,000 Kentucky Cup Turf Handicap (gr. IIIT) on Sunday at Kentucky Downs.On the firm turf, Chorwon raced towards the rear of the field as The Knight Sky set a slow pace to lead Kim Loves Bucky by 1 1/2 lengths after a half-mile run in :49.17. Kim Loves Bucky moved within a half-length of the lead after six furlongs run in 1:17.85 and a mile in 1:39.95. At that point Chorwon had moved up to fourth, about 1 1/2 lengths off the lead. From there the gray son of Cozzene took control under jockey Jon Kenton Court, completing the distance in 2:28.68, five lengths ahead of The Knight Sky. Man From Wicklow finished third, a neck ahead of Kim Loves Bucky, with Gritty Sandie a nose farther back in fifth. Three Wonders and Profit Option completed the order of finish.The win improved Chorwon's career mark to his 13 wins from 40 career starts and the $186,000 winner's share of the purse increased his career bankroll over the $1-million mark. He is trained by Hal Wiggins and was bred in Kentucky by Thomas C. Mueller.Chorwon returned $14.80, $6.60, and $5. The Knight Sky paid $9.40 and $8.20 and completed the $148.40 exacta.
