Trip Upsets Turfway Breeders' Cup Stakes

Claiborne Farm's homebred Trip earned her second career graded stakes win, upsetting the field to win the $200,000 Turfway Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. III) Saturday at Turfway Park. Under Craig Perret, the 4-year-old filly completed the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.47 on a fast track in winning by three lengths.

Asher led after the first quarter-mile before The Happy Hopper rushed up run the half-mile in :46.31, with Trip in fourth-place, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Spain. After six furlongs run in 1:10.93, Trip was a head behind leader The Happy Hopper and then pulled clear to win by three lengths over 45-1 longshot Precious Feather. Spain finished another three-quarter lengths back, a half-length ahead of fourth-place Royal Fair. The Happy Hopper, March Magic, and Asher completed the order of finish.

The win marks the fourth of the year for Trip (Lord At War -- Tour, by Forty Niner) and her eighth in 19 career starts. She earned $125,500 to push her career earnings to $670,598. Her other wins this year include the Fairway Fun Stakes and Chicago Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III).

Trip is currently trained by Frank Brothers but that may change at some point as Brothers was recently hired as Lazy Lanes Farm's private trainer.

Trip returned $16, $9.80, and $5. Precious Feather paid $27.80 and $6.20 and completed the $492 exacta. Spain paid $2.60. (Chart, Equibase)
