Proviso, who finished unplaced in Goldikova’s record third TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT) win at Churchill Downs Nov. 6, has been retired from racing to become a broodmare for Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms. The 5-year-old homebred mare, foaled in Great Britain, has arrived at Juddmonte near Lexington.

“She’s doing great, and has been turned out on the farm,” said farm manager Garrett O’Rourke. “She got a nice temperament.”

Proviso, who remains an Eclipse Award contender despite her recent loss, went into the race with four consecutive grade I wins, all at different racetracks. After beating males in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile Handicap (gr. IT) at Santa Anita, she won the Just a Game Stakes (gr. IT) at Belmont Park, captured the Diana Stakes (gr. IT) at Saratoga over subsequent Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) winner Shared Account, and took the Abu Dhabi First Lady Stakes (gr. IT) at Keeneland.

Proviso also was a group winner in France and group I-placed in France and England. During her career, she won or placed in 17 of 23 races and earned $1,705,473.

Proviso is by Dansili, who stands at Juddmonte in England. She is out of the Woodman mare Binche and is a half sister to English group I winner Byword.

Breeding plans are undecided.
