Lightly raced Aoife Alainn came storming home late to upset Antara and capture the Premio Lydia Tesio (Ity-I) at Capannelle Oct. 24.
Dismissed at odds of 18-1, Aoife Alainn was held up at the rear of the field by jockey Umberto Rispoli as Soberania went to the front and set the pace under Mirco Demuro. Frankie Dettori had the favorite Antara settled comfortably just behind the leader, and the pair let Soberania lead the way for much of the 10-furlong contest.
With just over a furlong to run, Antara swept past Soberania to take command. She appeared to be on her way to finally notching her first group I victory. At the same time, Aoife Alainn still had only one horse beaten, but produced a searing turn of foot to surge past Antara in the final yards to win easily by 2 ½ lengths.
Antara finished second, two lengths in front of Soberania. Final time for the race was 2:04.30 over the soft going.
Aoife Alainn is a 3-year-old filly by Dr Fong and is out of the unraced Hernando mare Divine Secret. Bred in Ireland by Scuderia Estero, Aoife Alainn is trained by Maurizio Guarnieri for owner Soc. All. M. Guarnieri.
