Rainbow Peak Scales Summit at San Siro

Rainbow Peak withstood the challenge of Lord Chaparral to notch his first group I victory in the Gran Premio del Jockey Club at San Siro Oct. 17.

Patiently handled by jockey Neil Callan, Rainbow Peak was settled in mid-pack as local runner Lord Chaparral led the field of nine along at a steady gallop.  Godolphin’s Cavalryman tracked the leader closely from third, as German group I heroine, Night Magic, raced in fourth.

Lord Chaparral continued to show the way under Mirco Demuro as the field entered the home straight, moving two lengths clear of the field.  With just over two furlongs left to run, Rainbow Peak launched his bid, charging down the center of the course under a strong drive by Callan.  

Rainbow Peak drew alongside Lord Chaparral with a furlong to go, and the two runners battled to the wire, with Rainbow Peak prevailing by a short head.  It was another 6 1/2 lengths farther back to Cavalryman in third.

Final time for the 12 furlongs was 2:36.10 over the very soft to heavy going.

With the victory, the Michael Jarvis-trained Rainbow Peak has improved his record to five wins in eight lifetime starts.  The 4-year-old gelding has never finished out of the money.

Rainbow Peak was bred in Ireland by his owner, Peter Savill.  He is by Hernando out of Celtic Fling, by Lion Cavern.  Celtic Fling has also produced the stakes winner Celtic Heroine, a full sister to Rainbow Peak.  Celtic Fling is a half-sister to champion Celtic Swing, who was also bred and owned by Savill.
