Trainer John Shirreffs has outlined a tentative plan for Zenyatta as the undefeated mare puts her 19-race win streak on the line and seeks to defend her title in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) at Churchill Downs Nov. 6.
In an Oct. 13 press release from the Zenyatta camp, a plan was outlined that includes three workouts for Zenyatta at Hollywood Park, each spaced eight days apart. The first of those planned workouts, on Thursday, Oct. 14, would be the first timed breeze for the 6-year-old mare since her victory in the Lady’s Secret Stakes (gr. I) Oct. 2. Two more workouts will likely follow Oct. 22 and 30, according to the release.
The release also said Shirreffs has confirmed a flight on a Tex Sutton charter for Zenyatta, which has her arriving in Kentucky Nov. 2--one day before the deadline to be at Churchill Downs for the World Championships.
"She’s got really good energy right now," said regular exercise rider Steve Willard, who was aboard for a routine gallop over Hollywood’s main track Oct. 13. "She likes to train and she seems happy. Of course she is a lady, so she has a little bit of an attitude once in a while, but we try to do what we can so she doesn’t mind so much."
Zenyatta will head to the track around 9 a.m. daily and will spend some time around 3 p.m. each day grazing outside her barn, according to the release.
