Favored Sidney's Candy has been withdrawn from the Oak Tree Mile (gr. IIT) Oct. 9 at Hollywood Park because he is due to be sold.
Trainer John Sadler said the sale is likely to be finalized Oct. 11 and that he will continue to train 3-year-old Sidney's Candy, winner of the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) this spring, .
"I can't say who the buyer is until they tell me it's okay, but I'm going to continue to train him. The plan is still the Breeders' Cup," Sadler said. He said the specific goal is the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) on the turf Nov. 6 at Churchill Downs.
Currently owned by his breeder, Jenny Craig, Sidney's Candy has won four graded stakes this year including the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) April 3. In his most recent start, the speedy son of Candy Ride --Fair Exchange, by Storm Cat, set a turf course record at Del Mar for 1 1/16 miles in his grass debut, winning the La Jolla Handicap (gr. IIT) by 5 1/2 lengths in a time of 1:39.52 Aug. 14.
Sidney's Candy's career mark is 5-2-0 in nine starts with earnings of $803,560. Following his 4 1/2-length triumph in the Santa Anita Derby, he finished 17th on a sloppy track in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), which is his only race over a dirt surface.
