An oversized field of 16 have entered Friday night's featured Boiling Springs Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Monmouth Park, but four of them will be forced to watch from the sidelines as the maximum number of racing entrants tops outs at 12 for the $200,000 turf event.
Likely favorite will be multiple graded stakes winner Mystic Lady who will be making her third start on the turf. She has finished in all three money positions in her three turf starts. The Mark Henning-trainee will carry 120 pounds with jockey Eibar Coa aboard. Coa rode the daughter of Thunder Gulch to wins in last November's Hollywood Wildcat Stakes at Calder and in the Fantasy Stakes (gr. II) at Oaklawn Park. Mystic Lady finished seventh in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I).
Challenging Mystic Lady will be Riviera Grace who will be making her first start in graded stakes company. She finished second to older rivals in the Spruce Fir Handicap at Monmouth Park in her last start. For Friday night's test, she will face only 3-year-olds and will break from the six hole with Alex Beitia getting the call.
The field for the $2000 Boiling Springs Handicap includes: Lady of the Future (Brent Bartram, 117); Mystic Lady (Coa, 120); Platinum Tiara (Pat Day, 117); Cozzy Corner (Jose Velez, Jr., 117); Fiddle (Jean-Luc Samyn, 117); Riviera Grace (Beitia, 113); New Economy (Tommy Turner, 114); Shooting Party (Jean-Luc Samyn, 114); Grey Ballet (Jose Ferrer, 115); Nouvelle (Jose Espinoza, 114); Plunderthepeasants (Tony Black, 114); and The Goddess Athird (Chuck C.
