If you're looking for a horse with an impressive list of star-studded stallions in his pedigree, then you can't get much better than Aptitude. Inbred 4x3 to Buckpasser and 4x5 on the sire side to Bold Ruler, Aptitude's first four generations also includes A.P. Indy, Seattle Slew, Northern Dancer, and Secretariat.
Although he has the pedigree to get a mile and a quarter with no problem, having proven it on the racetrack as well, he'd probably start losing effectiveness at longer distances. His dosage profile of 10-5-19-0-0 shows a dominance in the Classic category, but also a lot of speed to go along with it. Most people don't realize that because of the colt's come-from-behind style of running, but he did demonstrate some of that speed in the final furlong of last year's one-mile Gotham Stakes, when he exploded out of the pack with a blazing eighth of a mile to narrowly miss catching Red Bullet in 1:34 1/5. He no doubt gets a lot of that speed from his inbreeding on the male side to Bold Ruler.
On the female side, however, there is a strong distance influence through his dam, Dokki, who is a half-sister to Belmont Stakes winner Coastal. That gives him four Belmont winners and a sister to a Belmont winner in his first four generations. In short, Aptitude has a diverse group of influences throughout his pedigree that will allow him to be effective going short or long. And he should continue to improve with age.
